Nestled in the heart of Topanga Canyon, The Topanga Hideout is more than just a place; it’s a carefully crafted retreat that invites you to escape into nature’s embrace. Originally built in the 1920s the property transitioned from a long-term rental to a space designed to be shared with the world, simply because it’s too special not to. Whether you’re sipping coffee on the sun-drenched deck or exploring the winding trails that weave through the canyon, every moment spent here feels like a treasured escape from the everyday LA hustle.

How did the idea of The Topanga Hideout come to be?
My father-in-law bought the property in the 1990s and after a very long-term rental moved, we wanted to create a place to share with the world. Because it’s too special not to!
How did you approach the design elements, and what specific atmosphere were you aiming to craft through your interior design artistically?
Because the unit is surrounded by nature we wanted to bring more of the outdoor elements inside. The glass windows don’t have curtains so it’s not for everyone but the views are just so breathtaking that we wanted it to feel like you are one with nature. There is even a little indoor garden spanning the length of the entire main room.
Paint a picture of the local Topanga area, capturing the magic guests will likely experience during their visit.
Topanga Canyon is a little hippy chic town that has long been a tucked-away gem in California. It’s surrounded by a State Park on three sides and the Pacific Ocean on the other. Given its proximity to Los Angeles and its deep ties to nature, it has historically served as a welcome respite from the fast-paced Hollywood lifestyle for celebrities, including famed artists and musicians such as Emmylou Harris and Jim Morrison. Neil Young recorded After the Goldrush here back in the 60s. Today, it maintains its magic through a tight-knit community of artists, bohemians, spiritual seekers, and nature lovers. As the secret has slowly been let out, Topanga is increasingly becoming a popular destination for visitors from around the world.
How did you know that the creekside location of The Topanga Hideout was the perfect spot to share with others? Could you walk us through the process of realising this was the ideal place to offer a unique experience to guests?
When I finally saw this unit on my father-in-law’s property, the views were breathtaking… but it needed A LOT of work. The creek is so special and the glass windows make you feel like you are a part of it all. I couldn’t keep from sharing it! The house was built in the 1920s and there are only two neighbours that have access to this creek area (directly in front of their properties). It’s so private, it feels like your own creek and has very native energy. We are sure it was a special place of gathering in the far past.
In what ways has The Topanga Hideout embraced a low-waste approach, and how does it align with the values of conscious and eco-friendly travellers?
I was so happy when our friend Hayley opened up The Well; a highly curated refill store with all organic products. Once I stepped foot in her store I knew that I needed this to be an integral part of my life and a part of The Topanga Hideouts. I have also always despised looking at plastic soap containers so it was happily welcomed to use The Well’s metal and glass containers throughout and offer only organic products to our guests and to our family in our personal home.
Share the decision-making process behind incorporating Pampa into your interiors and elaborate on how, as a brand, Pampa aligns with your ethos.
Incorporating Pampa into our interior was a no-brainer. The colour schemes and the quality of the Pampa products are so luxurious and feel very nature-inspired. So it was the perfect fit!
Describe the perfect 24 hours spent in The Topanga Hideout.
Drive through the windy, tree-lined canyon from the beach or the valley and feel like you’re transported back to the 60s. Arrive at our property where you still may feel like you’re a part of the city while you park… Until you enter our gates and travel down 4 flights of stairs to our creek-side cabin unit that feels like a world away. Explore the creek by taking the rope and climbing down. In the springtime, you can take a cold plunge and sunbathe on the private beach area. Clean up in our funky blue tile bathroom and head into town to grab an unforgettable dinner at Endless Color or The Inn at the Seventh Ray. Come back to the cabin and doze off to the frog’s symphony. Wake up in the cosy king bed with the best views of the creek and canyon. Make coffee and lay in bed taking in the views or venture out to the deck and soak in your stay.
What’s next for you guys?
We are currently spending most of our time in the desert, close to Joshua Tree in Morongo Valley. We designed a neutral basketball court here at the ranch with spanning mountain views, fit for basketball, pickleball and the perfect place for a women’s circle, yoga or a sound bath. We host retreats, small events and photoshoots here. It’s also home to our rescue horses and burros. We have been very successful this year with our Beer Burros Brands company and in 2024 we will start a new offering; Brunch with the Burros up at our round pen on the property backed up to hundreds of acres of untouched land. I am facilitating mushroom journeys with my new company Lupasamama and am hosting them on Morongo Valley Ranch and at The Topanga Hideout.
