Stay | Le Cabanon

For this stay, we explore Le Cabanon, a 1960s beachside retreat restored by French photographer Victor Vieaux and his partner, Sharon Xie. Nestled along the shores of Phillip Island, this unique hideaway celebrates a seamless blend of nostalgia and contemporary design. Inspired by Le Corbusier’s iconic Riviera shack, Le Cabanon pays homage to its architectural roots while embracing modern comforts and an eco-conscious ethos.

Every detail of this home reflects Victor and Sharon’s thoughtful vision, marrying minimalist elegance with coastal warmth. The interiors tell a story of restoration and creativity, with each room having a distinct identity through vibrant colours and curated furnishings. Rugs from our Tango Collection were chosen to bring bold colour and dynamic texture to the home, perfectly complementing the vivid palette and modernist design cues. Outdoors, the tranquil leafy neighbourhood provides a peaceful setting, offering endless opportunities for exploration for anyone who stays.

1. What’s the story behind Le Cabanon and how did it come to be?

Nestled among the shores of a quaint beachside locale, Le Cabanon emerges as more than just a renovated 1960s beach house—it’s a testament to meticulous restoration and a reverence for architectural heritage. Originally conceived as a modest retreat reminiscent of Le Corbusier’s iconic French Riviera shack, this beach house has undergone a profound metamorphosis under the discerning eye of French photographer Victor Vieaux and his partner Sharon Xie. Victor and Sharon, both seasoned designers with a rich portfolio spanning Australia, Asia, and Europe, brought their wealth of experience to bear upon this project. Their journey through diverse architecture studios across continents has profoundly shaped their outlook on design and lifestyle, infusing their work with a unique blend of cultural influences and technical finesse. The renovation of Le Cabanon was not merely a restoration effort but a labor of love—an opportunity to breathe new life into a structure that had weathered the tides of time. Carefully preserving its nostalgic charm while integrating modern comforts, Victor and Sharon orchestrated a delicate balance between preservation and innovation.
The interiors of Le Cabanon now exude a harmonious blend of minimalist elegance and coastal warmth. Each space tells a story of its own with its own colorful identity, weaving together elements of history and contemporary design into a seamless tapestry of livable artistry.

2. Describe the perfect day spent in Phillip Island

A perfect day in Phillip Island starts with a stunning sunrise at Cape Woolamai, where you can marvel at the breathtaking coastal views. During the day, explore the island’s beautiful beaches, perfect for surfing or a relaxing walk. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at a local café like Anerie General. In the afternoon, visit the Koala Conservation Centre to see koalas in their natural habitat, and perhaps take a stroll along the boardwalks to appreciate the island’s flora and fauna. Observe wildlife from the many ferry options the island offers to spot seals or whales. End the day with a visit to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit for some thrilling motorsport action, or unwind with a peaceful evening at one of the island’s scenic viewpoints, watching the sunset. Afterward, head to the Penguin Parade, where you can watch the adorable little penguins return to their burrows at dusk.

3. How did Lena story and legacy influence your renovation approach?

We did not want to start this project with a blank canvas. Instead, we carefully analysed the flow of the house that Lena has enjoyed for decades before beginning the work. Our decisions were guided by the existing character of the home, transforming a few rooms to create space for new bathrooms. We tapped into the house’s qualities to renovate, consolidate, and enhance the place. Lena’s story and legacy influenced our renovation approach, driving our commitment to sustainability and harmoniously blending older and modern elements.
Lena inspected our progress several times, and we made sure to share every milestone with her. During her last visit with her best friend, she was amazed by the transformation of the living room and excited to see our design directions come to life.
Maintaining a connection with the home’s previous custodian is very special and meaningful to us. This house has a soul, and we made sure to honour our duties in preserving its essence.

4. What makes Le Cabanon a unique stay for guests?

Le Cabanon offers a truly unique experience for guests, starting with its exceptional location. Situated centrally, it’s close to the town centre and the new Berninneit Cultural Centre and Theatre, providing easy access to local arts and entertainment. The property is also very near the Penguin Centre and within walking distance to the beach, making it perfect for nature lovers. Surfing enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to popular surf spots, while the leafy, calm neighbourhood ensures a peaceful retreat.
The interior design of Le Cabanon is another highlight, blending nostalgic and modern features seamlessly. Each bedroom has its own distinct identity and colour scheme, reflecting a subtle and elegant design ethos. The styling of the home is special and always evolving, and it has been featured in various design magazines, showcasing its uniquness.
Comfort is paramount at Le Cabanon, with the home embracing sustainable living. We have a beautiful, modern, and efficient fireplace that adds warmth and ambiance. The home is bright and airy, allowing guests to enjoy the natural surroundings with two inviting decks that provide perfect spots for relaxation and outdoor dining.
Le Cabanon is a place where guests can enjoy a perfect blend of convenience, style, and sustainability, making it a standout choice for a memorable stay. It exudes a special vibe inspired by Victor’s French heritage, combined with a nostalgic Aussie beach shack feel that adds a unique charm to the experience.

5. The space features mainly Pampa Tango collection. Can you tell us why you chose these rugs and how the burst of red works within your space?

The Tango Collection was selected for its vibrant use of colour and deep cultural significance. Rather than opting for safe, off-white tones, we decided to infuse Le Cabanon with select joyful hues, adding small touches that make each room distinctive. The burst of red in the Pampa Tango rugs introduces warmth and vibrancy, perfectly complementing the minimalist and modernist design of the space. These rugs not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also reflect our appreciation for artistry. The wool material adds a luxurious sensory experience. The Pampa Tango collection brings a lively energy to the interior, creating a welcoming and dynamic environment for our guests.
